Snore and noise detection coming to Fitbit smartwatches

Fitbit is already offering pretty advanced sleep monitoring, but the company is now working on new capabilities that will help determine the quality of your sleep.

An APK teardown conducted by 9to5Google reveals that the Google-owned company is developing snore detection, which means the tracker will listen to you during sleep and then figure out if you snore.

According to a description provided by Fitbit itself in the app, the tracker will enable the microphone and listen to the sounds in the room, though this means it can’t actually tell for sure who’s snoring.

The company says it analyzes the noise level to determine the baseline noise level, as well as how much you snore.

“We look for snore-specific noises. When our algorithm detects an event that’s louder than the baseline noise level, it performs a calculation to decide if it’s snoring or something else. If the noise level in your room is louder than the snoring, this feature may not be able to pick up the snoring,” it says.

The snoring level will then be given a rating from none to frequent.

Your sleep animal

Fitbit trackers will also be able to determine the noise in the room, which this time will be rated from very quiet (30 dBA or lower) to very loud (90 dBA or higher).

“The Noise Level chart shows the volume in your sleeping environment including snoring and other ambient noise. This information comes from the acoustic pressure measured by the microphone on your Fitbit device,” it says.

Based on all these figures, Fitbit will help determine a sleep score and give you what the company is referring to as “Your sleep animal.” This is more like a badge that you’ll see within an app and show what animal sleeps in the same way you do.
