The company says some batteries can overheat

Fitbit has announced a massive recall of absolutely all Ionic smartwatches it sold worldwide due to what it describes as a burn hazard caused by a faulty battery that can overheat.

Only the Fitbit Ionic is concerned by the recall, so all the other models are theoretically fine. The recall covers all Ionic smartwatches sold between 2017 and 2020 when the company stopped building this model.

Fitbit recommends customers to stop using the Ionic right away, explaining that everybody will be provided with a refund or special discounts for other Fitbit devices, bands, and services.

“After a thorough investigation, we determined that in very limited instances, the battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard. Your safety is always our top priority, and we are taking this action out of an abundance of caution. We’re offering a refund to Fitbit Ionic customers,” Fitbit explains.

Batteries overheating only in a small number of cases

Worth knowing is that this recall has nothing to do with the skin irritation that some people might experience because of the materials used for the manufacturing of the smartwatch or the band.

Fitbit clearly emphasizes the recall covers only the Fitbit Ionic due to burning hazards that may or may not occur (the chances are only a few people suffered such an injury, as Fitbit says it spotted the problem only in very limited instances).

“Despite all our efforts, a small number of people may experience a reaction to certain materials. This reaction is typically due to eczema, allergies, or other skin sensitivities, which can become worse when irritants like sweat or soap get trapped beneath the band and irritate the skin. This recall is not related to skin irritation,” the company explains.

Additional information on the recall and how to get a refund can be found on the official page of the campaign right here. Fitbit explains that customers who have questions that weren’t included in the FAQ on this page should reach out to customer service in their regions.
