An early look at rounded tabs is available in Nightly

Mozilla is working on a major Firefox redesign internally named Proton, and now the first improvements are already available in the Nightly build of the browser.

As you probably know already, rounded corners seem to become the next big thing in software, with Microsoft itself also working on bringing this design refresh to Windows.

The company has been testing rounded corners in several apps, and it’s believed it won’t take long until this refresh goes live in the operating system. In the meantime, Mozilla is also planning a similar facelift for its flagship product, and as noted by GHacks, a small part is already available for testing in the Nightly build of Firefox.

The browser now comes with rounded corners, and you can see in the screenshot here what the whole thing looks like.

How to try it out today

But on the other hand, it’s very important to note this is just an early implementation of the refresh, so it goes without saying it’s not exactly as refined as you’d expect it to be. There are obviously lots of things Mozilla still needs to improve, but this is actually the purpose of the Nightly build in the first place – this version helps the parent company collect feedback and allow users to try out new features in advance before they get more polished to debut in beta builds.

If you want to try out the new rounded tabs in Firefox, you can easily do this by simply installing the latest Nightly build on your device.

After that, launch the browser and type about:config in the address bar. Search for the following flag (note that the flag doesn’t exist just yet, so tap the plus sign to create it and then click the toggle to enable it):

browser.proton.tabs.enabled

Reboot the browser and then the rounded corners should be active.
