Only new-gen consoles will be supported, it seems

EA has recently released an announcement that was received with much enthusiasm by FIFA players out there, before most of them eventually ended up disappointed.

FIFA 22 is getting support for cross-play, and while this sounds like really, really good news, the whole thing comes with a huge catch: if you have a PlayStation 5 console, you won’t be able to play against your friend with a PC.

This is because the cross-play support is only aimed at new-gen consoles, such as the new Xbox and the PlayStation 5.

For now, only online seasons and online friendlies will be supported, so no Ultimate Team at this point. Sure, it’s still more than nothing, but the cross-play support, which EA insists is still in testing for now, should unlock the full capabilities of the game, regardless of the platform.

“While we want to enable our players to play with as many friends and others as possible, we limited the test to these two modes with the aim of reducing the chance for introducing new issues into the game. We are confident that the game data and feedback that we get from these two modes will help inform how Cross-play could further be implemented in future titles,” EA explains.

Cross-play test already live

The match-making works exactly as before, so the player you’ll be playing against you shouldn’t be a champion, unless you’re also one.

“Assuming that you have the Cross-play test enabled, you can head into Online Seasons as you normally would, there’s nothing else that needs to be done. As usual, the matchmaking will search for an appropriate opponent, and they may or may not end up being on a different platform than you,” EA notes.

The test is already live for FIFA 22 players, but as said, it still leaves a lot of room for improvements, especially in terms of supported platforms.
