Red Hat-sponsored Fedora Project announced the release and general availability of the Fedora 28 Linux-based operating system for desktops, servers, and cloud environments.

Powered by the latest GNU/Linux and Open Source technologies, the Fedora 28 operating system looks to be a great release and the first to introduce long-anticipated modular repository for the Fedora Server edition, allowing sysadmins to choose between different available branches of server-oriented software programs, such as Django or Node.JS. It also ships with the Kubernetes 1.9 production-grade container orchestration tool, and the latest Linux 4.16 kernel.

"The Fedora Project’s mission is to bring leading-edge innovation to our users, and Fedora 28 offers that through the addition of some of the latest open source technologies including GNOME 3.28 and Kubernetes 1.9. Additionally, with the introduction of the new modular repository, Fedora 28 users are provided with more control over their environments through the ability to choose the right speed for various updates based on their unique needs," said Matthew Miller, Fedora Project Leader.

The many features of Fedora 28

Among some of the major changes included in the Fedora 28 release, we can mention support for 64-bit ARM (Aarch64) as primary architecture for Fedora Server, GNOME 3.28 as default desktop environment for Fedora Workstation, GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) 8 as default system compiler, accompanied by Golang 1.10 and Ruby 2.5, automatic updates for Fedora Atomic Host, and an easier way to enable various third-party repositories, including those containing the proprietary Nvidia graphics drivers.

Fedora 28 Workstation edition includes GNOME Photos as the default photo management application, support for Thunderbolt 3 connections, better battery life through new active-by-default power saving features, improved emoji support, and GNOME Usage, an application that lets users easily and quickly diagnose and resolve performance and capacity issues in Fedora Linux. Fedora 28 also comes with major improvements to VirtualBox guest support, and it's available to download right now on our web portal.
