Anti-cheat software leading to Green Screen of Death

The development of Windows 10 version 1903 (19H1) is approaching the final stages, but Microsoft has been testing the majority of builds with help from Fast ring insiders.

Because right now, users enrolled in the Slow ring haven’t received a build for five months or so.

But according to Windows Insider chief Dona Sarkar, it’s all because of a fatal crash experienced when playing games with certain anti-cheat software.

Sarkar explained in a couple of tweets that such a bug has prevented the company from rolling out a new Windows 10 19H1 preview build to Slow ring insiders, as its data shows that a significant number of users here are heavy gamers.

Fix developed by third party

As a result, serving a build that would only impact their gaming experience wasn’t the right way to go, and Microsoft decided to wait until the issue is fixed and only then update the Slow ring.

“Many of you are asking why we haven't released a #SlowRing flight in a while. We have a GSOD that's caused by a very common scenario around gaming anti-cheat codes. Unfortunately the fix is in the hands of our 3rd party partner company that we're working with them on,” she tweeted.

“Looking at our #SlowRing population, MANY of you play these games so your machines would be very difficult to use--we are committed to releasing Slow builds that are high quality so this is why we're holding the build.”

At this point, there’s no ETA regarding the possible release date of a new build for Slow ring insiders. What’s worse is that the fix isn’t developed by Microsoft, but by a third-party company whose name wasn’t disclosed, so it could eventually take longer than anticipated for the bug to get fixed.

Windows 10 19H1 is projected to be finalized next month, so more news on this front should be shared in the coming weeks.
