Only some insiders are getting it for now, it seems

Microsoft has started rolling out a new Photos app to users enrolled in the Windows Insider program and running Windows 11 preview build.

Originally teased earlier this week, the updated Photos app comes with refreshed UI that includes all the modern Windows 11 interface improvements, including the rounded corners. Furthermore, there’s also a dark mode, which makes perfect sense given the same visual style is also available at OS level.

While only select insiders are getting the new Photos app right now, everybody should be able to try out the new version in the coming weeks, especially because Windows 11 is close to reaching the RTM phase.

According to Microsoft’s official release calendar, Windows 11 will start rolling out to production devices on October 5, so in theory, the operating system should be signed off at some point this month.

Free upgrade only for eligible devices.

Windows 11 will be shipped to devices that meet the system requirements, as Microsoft says it needs newer hardware to guarantee the best experience on all devices.

As a result, not everybody will receive Windows 11 free of charge, though these computers can stick with Windows 10 until 2025, as Microsoft remains committed to supporting the operating system according to its original calendar.

“As our unprecedented number of Windows Insiders have shown, most people with eligible devices will choose to move to Windows 11 to experience all the new innovations across connection, productivity, creativity and play that it has to offer. For those who are using a PC that won’t upgrade, and who aren’t ready to transition to a new device, Windows 10 is the right choice. We will support Windows 10 through October 14, 2025 and we recently announced that the next feature update to Windows 10 is coming later this year,” Microsoft says.
