The company will no longer launch a smartwatch

We’ve known for a while that Facebook was working on a smartwatch, but as it turns out, the plan has already been dropped, with the company to focus on other projects.

The news comes from Bloomberg, with the report revealing that Facebook wants to invest in other wrist-worn devices that make more sense in the long term.

And while the Facebook watch has been killed off before it even got the chance to see daylight, it’s important to know the company wanted from the very beginning to turn the device into a highly innovative device.

For example, one of the biggest features of the Facebook watch was a dual-camera setup. The device was supposed to come with one camera on the front and another one of the back, as Facebook hoped that people would remove the smartwatch and use it for taking photos.

And given Facebook and Instagram integration was also supposed to be part of the feature lineup, posting new content on the social network and updating statuses straight from the smartwatch pretty much made sense.

But Facebook’s investments in such innovations backfired, as the company’s push for electromyography integration proved too much of a challenge. Thanks to this system, the smartwatch was equipped with the ability of reading nerve signals, which when converted to digital commands, would have served as a way to connect to the metaverse.

As everybody knows already, the metaverse is Facebook’s big bet in the long term, so the smartwatch obviously played a key role for this strategy.

For the time being, it just looks like Facebook is giving up on its dream of launching a smartwatch, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s also giving up on wearables. The company is still investing in other wrist-based products, according to the same report.
