Arne Exton released a new stable version of his Ubuntu-based ExTiX "The Ultimate Linux System" operating system that now uses the Linux 4.18 kernel series.

Based on packages from the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) and Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system series, ExTiX 18.7 is the first release of the GNU/Linux distribution to use the forthcoming Linux 4.18 kernel series, which is currently in development and should hit the streets early next month.

Arne Exton was brave enough to rebase his ExTiX Linux operating system on the fifth Release Candidate of Linux kernel 4.18, which is patched to allow the installation of Nvidia’s proprietary graphics drivers. Arne Exton's 4.18.0-rc5-extix kernel replaces kernel 4.16.2-exton used in the previous release, but it's an unstable kernel.

"My special kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix corresponding kernel.org’s unstable kernel 4.18-rc5 is used," said Arne Exton. "ExTiX 18.7 LXQt DVD 64-bit is based on Debian 9 Stretch and Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver. The original system includes the desktop environment GNOME. After removing GNOME I have installed LXQt 0.12.0."

Firefox replaces Google Chrome as default web browser

With this release, ExTiX now uses the Mozilla Firefox web browser by default instead of Google Chrome, as well as the Calamares universal installer framework instead of Ubuntu's Ubiquity installer. The default desktop environment of ExTiX Linux remains the lightweight LXQt 0.12.0.

All the packages included in ExTiX 18.7 have been updated to their latest versions as of July 23, 2018. These include the LibreOffice 6.0.5 office suite, Mozilla Thunderbird 52.9 email and news client, and Mozilla Firefox 61.0.1 web browser. Packages like Gparted, Brasero, SMPlayer, and GCC are present as well.

As usual, you can download ExTiX 18.7 right now through our web portal if you want to use this Ubuntu/Debian-based operating system on your personal computer. ExTiX can be run directly from a USB bootable stick on machines with more than 2GB RAM, and with persistence so you can save all your changes on the USB drive.
