The studio confirms that no one is working on it, anymore

Unreal Tournament was a title in development at Epic Games, and it showed much promise, but it seems that the project is now pretty much dead, or at least in limbo.

Unreal Tournament is actually a franchise that’s been around for a very long time, and the latest version in the series was in active development at Epic Games. This is the same studio that builds the Unreal Engine, so we know it was in good hands.

The studio has some great plans for the game, and they even toyed with the idea of making it free for everyone, with some cosmetic items being sold. There was even a store planned where people could sell their own designs. It was going to be great, but now that’s dead.

It’s Fortnite’s fault

Fortnite is the only reason why Unreal Tournament is dead. Epic Games accidentally made the most played game on the planet, and now they no longer have the resources to build Unreal Tournament as well.

Epic Games' founder, Tim Sweeney, talked with Variety about Unreal Tournament, and he said that the project is no longer under active development. That means that there isn’t even a skeleton crew.

The project was initially on hold, but it’s now obvious that Unreal Tournament is no longer the focus for Epic. Furthermore, the last update for the game dates from all the way back in the summer of 2017.

It’s also very likely that Fortnite will turn out to be a just a fad, or that it will be replaced by some other game that does it better. For what’s it worth, Unreal Tournament is a classic, and it will remain in the public consciousness for a long time. It’s quite possible that the game will return in the future, but it will be a while.
