Indiegogo seeks funding for AppCenter ecosystem upgrade

The AppCenter ecosystem is projected to receive a massive upgrade in elementary OS if a new Indiegogo fundraising campaign proves to be successful.

And by the looks of things, it’s all just a matter of time until elementary Inc. raises the necessary $10,000 for “bringing together a team from around the world to work together in person for a week-long sprint in Denver, Colorado.”

Basically, what elementary wants is cover the expenses of the people making this happen, as it paves the way for the next-generation Linux app store.

The team working on the project include developers from Endless, Flathub, and GNOME, and elementary says the help it receives from these groups is essential for the future of the AppCenter.

“With AppCenter and Flatpak, apps will be installed per user and won’t require advanced permissions to download; so you won’t have to type your password anymore to get apps or their updates,” it says on the Indiegogo page.

Secure wallet to store payment options

Sandboxing will be offered by default for new apps, as they will be restricted from system and personal files, running in an isolated container from other apps.

Furthermore, elementary says Flatpak will make it possible to “bundle cutting edge dependencies,” which will technically empower developers with more advanced engines whenever they want to create more advanced apps and games.

The new store will also feature new payment dialogs that are separated from the AppCenter app on the OS.

“The new AppCenter Authenticator will not only power payments on elementary OS, but it will enable developers to monetize their Open Source apps on other popular Linux-based operating systems like Ubuntu and Fedora from right inside the app stores that are already available on those operating systems,” it says, adding a secure wallet to store payment methods is also in the works.

Of course, this new AppCenter version won’t just happen overnight, so any help is without a doubt welcome. At the time of writing, the project is already 80% funded.
