Surface Book is already at its second generation

Despite featuring a rather unconventional design, the Surface Book has been one of Microsoft’s most successful products, boasting the same 2-in-1 approach as other Surface models, but insisting more on the laptop side.

And while the Surface Book is already at its second generation, with a third one expected later this year, Microsoft employee Ralf Groene decided to provide us with a glimpse not into the future of the device, but in the past.

A photo posted recently on Instagram offers a closer look at an early prototype of the Surface Book, showing how the software giant ended up creating the mechanism that allowed the device to fold like a laptop, but at the same time to enable the removal of the screen.

As you can see, Microsoft originally tested the system using nothing more than a 9-volt battery, and it’s amazing how much this product has evolved to eventually become the advanced Surface Book that we can buy right now.

New Surface upgrades coming this year

Also interesting is that Microsoft is already believed to be working on a new generation of the Surface Book, and if the rumor mill is right, it should go live as soon as this year.

Microsoft is expected to take the wraps off several new Surface products later this year, including not only the highly-anticipated Andromeda, but also this third-generation Surface Book.

While the second generation, which came out in 2018, brought upgrades mostly in the hardware department, the upcoming facelift could include much more than that, like a new form factor or even improvements in terms of design. Of course, this is just a guess for now, as Microsoft has typically stayed tightlipped on new Surface models until the official launch.

The unveiling could take place in the fall, as per the company’s typical release cycle for the Surface lineup.
