A new version of the commercial and cross-platform Wine graphical frontend CrossOver has been released today for both GNU/Linux and macOS operating system with a couple of improvements.

Designed from the offset to make it easier for GNU/Linux and macOS users to run applications built for the Microsoft Windows operating system on their computers, CrossOver is a well-designed graphical user interface (GUI) to the popular and open-source Wine program. It's compatible with both GNU/Linux and macOS platforms.

The latest release, CrossOver 17.5.0 is here to improve support for the Microsoft Office 2016 office suite on both GNU/Linux and macOS platforms by addressing various bug reported by users lately. According to the release notes, users should now encounter less crashes when using Microsoft Office 2016.

CrossOver 17.5 makes the first step towards full macOS 64-bit support

Another interesting change that landed in this release is the removal of the legacy X Window System from the macOS build of CrossOver. According to the development, the legacy X Window System was used only as a fallback display technology since CrossOver 13 series for apps that needed the older display server.

"As the first step towards making CrossOver fully 64-bit compatible, we have removed the Legacy X Window System. The Legacy X Window System has been a fallback display technology since CrossOver 13, used in a limited set of circumstances," reads the changelog.

As such, this is the first step CodeWeavers took to make their CrossOver app fully compatible with upcoming releases of Apple's macOS operating system, which will soon stop accepting 32-bit applications. Existing customers can freely download CrossOver 17.5.0 for either GNU/Linux or macOS operating systems from the official website, from where new users can buy the latest CrossOver release.
