Roll dice once more to save a ship filled with refugees

A five, with my special character boost, will make it easy to get the food I need to get to the refugee ship to make sure no one starves. I also need to find some water and scrap for them. My Sleeper is in good condition and has plenty of money but, even with the special ability to re-roll dice, it might still be touch and go when it comes to the delivery of help to those who need it.

Citizen Sleeper Episode: FLUX is developed by Jump Over The Age and published by Fellow Traveller. I played this first piece of downloadable content on the PC using Steam, but it is also available on the Nintendo Switch, the Xbox Series X and S, and older consoles from Microsoft.

The story of the DLC focuses on a fleet of refugees that suddenly appear on the Eye and instantly create tension. There’s a quarantine, the station is under strain, and the people on the newly arrived Climbing Briar ship are in need. The Sleeper quickly meets Eshe, the campaign, and Peake, second in command, and gets roped into their plan to get the people from the ship to the station.

There’s no tweak to the gameplay of Citizen Sleeper in this DLC. Players need to keep their Sleeper in good shape, avoid starvation, and then carefully think about how to best invest their dice. Because the content is designed with a late-game character in mind, gamers need to focus their efforts to beat some tight time limits. But there’s little challenge for a player that has already reached one of the game’s endings and the gameplay, which felt fresh in the core game, has lost some of its shine.

Citizen Sleeper Episode: FLUX does not tinker with the unique visual style of the core game. Navigating the Eye, especially if moving between missions, can be a chore, but the design of the characters remains a bright spot. The sound design is well-suited to the setting.

Conclusion

Episode: FLUX is a definite Yay for anyone who has played through Citizen Sleeper and liked the narrative and the gameplay. The new story is not as engaging as the best bits of the original campaign and there’s less of a sense of exploration and discovery.

The development team at Jump Over The Age plans to deliver two other pieces of DLC for Citizen Sleeper. I hope that at least one of them is longer than an hour and delivers an expansion to the mechanics of the title.
