Data highlights the total domination of the Chromium engine

It’s no surprise that Google Chrome is the number one browser out there on both desktop and mobile, but a new set of data highlights the total domination of the Chromium engine on the PC.

NetMarketShare figures reveal that last month, Google Chrome was running on no less than 69.18% of all PCs out there. The runner-up was the new Microsoft Edge, also based on Chromium, which secured the second place with a 7.76% market share.

Mozilla Firefox, which continues to be considered the only worthy alternative to Chromium browsers, is now third with 7.25% market share.

And while both Chrome and Edge continue to improve its market share, these numbers show that the Chromium engine is the preferred choice for an impressive number of PC users (no matter if we’re talking about Windows, Linux, or macOS).

The Chromium domination

Combined, Chromium browsers are installed on over 77% of all desktop computers out there (without taking into account the market share of Chromium underdogs like Vivaldi and others and which NetMarketShare hasn’t included in its new set of data).

In addition to the 77% market share that goes to Chromium, no less than 5.18% of the devices still rely on Internet Explorer for browsing. It goes without saying that most users still running Internet Explorer will probably move to Chromium sooner or later, as Microsoft keeps insisting for Edge on all Windows versions, so the total market share of this engine is set to grow to a new record in the coming months.

Firefox remains the only popular alternative to the Chromium engine, especially now that Microsoft itself has abandoned EdgeHTML. Mozilla has previously criticized Microsoft’s decision to adopt Chromium for its Windows 10 browser, but until now, this idea seems to be paying off, as the new Edge keeps getting new users on a regular basis.
