Ubuntu 19.04 (Disco Dingo) has officially reached the end of support on January 23, 2020, approximately 9 months after its public launch. Users are obviously recommended to upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10 to benefit from bug fixes and security updates going forward.

As we told you earlier this month, Ubuntu installations aren’t the only ones affected by the retirement of Disco Dingo, but also other distros based on the same release, including here the likes of Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu.

Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan Ermine) is the recommended upgrade for all users, Canonical says in a security advisory published this week.

“As of today (Jan 23, 2020), Ubuntu 19.04 is no longer supported. No more package updates will be accepted to 19.04, and it will be archived to old-releases.ubuntu.com in the coming weeks,” Canonical explains.

“Ubuntu announced its 19.04 (Disco Dingo) release almost 9 months ago, on April 18, 2019. As a non-LTS release, 19.04 has a 9-month support cycle and, as such, the support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 19.04 will reach end of life on Thursday, Jan 23rd. Ubuntu 19.10 continues to be actively supported with security updates and select high-impact bug fixes.”

Direct upgrades are available from Ubuntu 19.04 to Ubuntu 19.10, but also from Kubuntu 19.04 to Kubuntu 19.10.

How to upgrade

Upgrading an Ubuntu desktop system to version 19.10 can be done using the following steps:

Run update-manager
Update Manager > Settings > Software Sources > Updates
Notify me of a new Ubuntu version > For any new version
Check for updates in Update Manager
Upgrade
On the other hand, upgrading an Ubuntu Server to the latest version requires the following commands:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
edit etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and set Prompt=normal
do-release-upgrade
In both cases, the upgrade process will begin and users only need to follow the wizard displayed on the screen.
