If you’re currently running Windows 10 and don’t feel secure just with Windows Defender protecting your device, you should definitely check out the latest round of antivirus tests conducted by the experts over at AV-TEST.

Probably the most surprising thing about this new research is that high-profile security vendors like Bitdefender and Kaspersky no longer reached the top score.

First, let’s start with the highest-rated security products. F-Secure SAFE, McAfee Internet Security, and Symantec Norton Security are the three suites that received the maximum of 18 points, scoring 6 points in each test for protection, performance and usability.

Kaspersky Internet Security, which has until recently been a leader in the antivirus world, scored 17.5 points, after it lost 0.5 points in the performance test.

Windows Defender still a top AV

But on the other hand, Bitdefender Internet Security dropped to no less than 16.5 points, the same score obtained by AhnLab V3 Internet Security and Microworld eScan Internet Security Suite. Bitdefender’s solution received 5.5 points for protection, 5.5 points for performance, and 5.5 points for usability, so there’s room for improvements in nearly every single area.

Trend Micro Internet Security also fell to 16.5 points after previously leading the charts. This particular product was rated with 5.5, 5.0, and 6.0 points for protection, performance, and usability, respectively.

Malwarebytes Premium got the lowest score of just 14 points after being rated with 4.5 points for protection, 5 points for performance, and 4.5 points for usability.

Microsoft’s Windows Defender continues to be a truly advanced security product with a total score of 17 points after getting the maximum rating for protection and only 5.5 points for performance and usability.

Windows Defender comes pre-installed in Windows 10 and it’s enabled automatically when no other antivirus solution runs on the device.
