14 DAY TRIAL // A new series of tests conducted by security experts at AV-TESTS provides a closer look at the existing choices in the antivirus market, helping users choose the apps that offer the best protection on a Windows 10 device.
The March/April 2019 research was passed with flying colors by five different security products from Bitdefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky Lab, McAfee, and Symantec.
All these antivirus solutions received the maximum of 18 points, with 6 points in each of the three tests for protection, performance, and usability.
On other hand, there are 6 security products that scored a total of 17.5 points, losing just 0.5 points in one of the three tests. These are the antivirus engines developed by AhnLab, Avast, AVG, Avira, Microsoft, and VIPRE Security.
The lowest score this time goes to PC Pitstop PC Matic, which received only 15.5 points after scoring 6 points for protection, another 6 for performance, but just 3.5 points for usability.
Windows Defender, a top antivirus
Microsoft’s very own Windows Defender once again impressed after getting a score of 17.5 points, with 6 points for protection, 5.5 points for performance, and 6 points for usability.
Windows Defender is offered as the native security solution for Windows 10 devices, and comes pre-installed on all versions of the OS.
Windows Defender offered 100% protection in both the March and the April tests against 0-day malware attacks and new samples discovered in the last 4 weeks, beating or matching the industry average of 99.3% and 100%, respectively.
Microsoft’s antivirus generated no false warnings or blocks when browsing the web, but instead mistakenly detected one legitimate application as malware during a system scan. However, the industry average is 3 such warnings, as per AV-TEST.
Windows Defender did not send any false positives during installing or using legitimate software.
