Apple wants 5G not just on one iPhone, but on all of them

The 2020 iPhone generation will officially introduce 5G support, but while the company was originally believed to be planning just one model with such capabilities, it looks like we’re in for a big surprise.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple will bring 5G not just to one iPhone, but to the entire 2020 lineup, which will include three different models.

According to earlier reports, Apple’s 2020 iPhone family will include 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch screen sizes, with people familiar with the matter revealing the 5G connectivity would be powered by a Qualcomm chip.

Apple and Qualcomm settled their legal dispute a couple of months ago, entering an agreement that would have the San Diego-based firm supply chips for future-generations iPhones.

Cheaper iPhone for China?

Kuo says that Apple wants to bring 5G to all iPhones mostly because of the growing pressure from Android devices, as it’s expected that more affordable smartphones running Google’s OS, including those in the $350 price range, would get similar capabilities early next year.

The analyst also says Apple wants to launch a Chinese version of the iPhone with support for sub-6GHz spectrum, which would technically make it possible for the company to reduce the price of the device. A mmWave iPhone is also planned, but this could be released in international markets only.

Next year, all iPhones will also migrate to OLED screens, so the 2020 iPhone XR successor would no longer use LCD. The 2019 iPhone XR is thus the last iPhone to use LCD.

Needless to say, everything is still in the planning stage, so whether or not Apple would bring 5G to all iPhones still remains to be seen. For the time being, however, it’s better to take everything with a pinch of salt and focus on the 2019 iPhone lineup due in just a matter of weeks.
