14 DAY TRIAL // One of the areas that are getting much attention from smartphone makers these days is battery life, and just like its rivals, Samsung is looking into new technologies to improve it.
After increasing the capacity of its batteries on the Note 9, Samsung is now planning a different approach, and the next-generation phablet could come with a different type of battery.
It’s called graphene, and according to a tweet from Samsung_News_ (an unofficial account with a good track on Samsung scoops), it has already passed the internal testing.
In other words, graphene-based batteries are ready to be installed on Samsung’s phones, so the 2019 generation could come with this new technology. This means both the Galaxy S10 and the Note 10 could feature it, though there’s a bigger chance only the latter would get it.
The advantages of graphene batteries
In case you’re wondering what’s so special about graphene batteries, there are several aspects that recommend them over their li-ion siblings.
First and foremost, they charge much faster, and according to estimates, a 4,000 mAh unit like the one on the Note 9 could go from 0 to 100 in approximately 30 minutes. That’s impressive to say the least, and it’d push Samsung’s fast charging system to a completely new level.
Also, the degradation process takes place at a slower pace, so technically, it would take more time for a graphene battery to require servicing. Right now, lithium-ion batteries are said to lose around 10 percent of their capacity every year.
And last but not least, graphene batteries do not suffer from overheating, which in turn means that the risk of a fire or explosion is significantly reduced. Samsung already knows how important this is following the Note 7 fiasco when its phones caught on fire, so it’s an important step forward.
For the time being, Samsung has remained completely tight-lipped on this new tech, but it’s without a doubt one of the approaches that the company has in mind for its future lineup.
