The charger won’t be sold separately, according to report

Apple’s trio of iPhones going live this September will come with an upgrade in terms of charging as well, as the Cupertino-based tech giant has prepared a new fast charger for this generation.

The 18W USB-C fast charger is expected to be included in the box when getting a new iPhone, but according to a new report, it won’t be sold separately.

Such a decision is a little odd, especially because Apple is late to the party with fast charging capabilities. iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X are the models supporting fast charging, while Android smartphones have had this feature for many years already.

This year’s iPhone generation could benefit from upgraded fast charging and the 18W USB-C adapter will play a key role. Macotakara says only those who purchase a new iPhone would get the charger, as Apple doesn’t want to sell it separately in its stores.

Third-party fast chargers

This could be just a temporary decision that Apple may revert at some point in the future, probably because it just wants to make sure it gives the 2018 device lineup some exclusive time on the market.

At the same time, it’s believed Cupertino could allow third-party accessory makes to use the new Lightning chip known as C48B and projected to be used on the new iPhones. This means that other companies could manufacture fast chargers as well, as long as they comply with the Made for iPhone certification program.

The current iPhone generation comes with a standard 5W charger in the box, which needless to say, is incredibly slow and doesn’t take advantage of the new fast charging system. Customers have to purchase an adapter separately.

As with everything Apple, there’s no confirmation available at this point, and the company could change its mind at any given point in the coming weeks and months ahead of the new iPhone unveiling.
