Apple has announced that watchOS 9, the next major operating system for the Apple Watch, will include a new feature that will make it possible for users to track their medications.

Furthermore, the feature will support vitamins and supplements, and needless to say, it’ll include settings to set up schedules and reminders.

Thanks to integration in the Health app, the new Medications feature will also include information on each medication.

Such capabilities have until now been missing from the Apple Watch, though on the iPhone, users could install one of the many apps that were available on the Apple Store.

“The new Medications experience on Apple Watch and iPhone helps users manage and track their medications, vitamins, and supplements, allowing them to create a medications list, set up schedules and reminders, and view information on their medications in the Health app. The Medications app on Apple Watch makes it easy for users to conveniently and discreetly track medications anytime, anywhere,” the Cupertino-based tech giant announced at WWDC this week.

Coming to the Series 4 and later

Unfortunately, some capabilities would only be available for Apple Watch owners in the United States, including information on possible integrations between medications added to the app.

“Custom schedules can be created for each medication, whether it needs to be taken multiple times a day, once a week, or as needed, and users can set up reminders to help keep them on track. In the US, users can receive an alert if there are potential critical interactions with medications they have added to the Health app,” Apple said.

While watchOS 9 is already available for testing for registered developers, the public beta is only projected to go live in July. As for the production launch, this should take place at some point in September for the Apple Watch Series 4 and newer.
