New statistics published by Counterpoint Research show that despite Apple Watch remaining the number one smartwatch out there, its market share actually declined from 30.1 percent to 28.0 percent in the second quarter of the year versus the same period a year ago.

Huawei remained the second company in the charts with a 9.3 percent share, down from 13.1 percent in 2020, while Samsung increased its share from 6.8 percent to 7.6 percent.

More notable is that Garmin entered the top five after a long time thanks to the highest shipments ever during the quarter, eventually security a share of 5.8 percent.

Growing Apple Watch user base

Counterpoint Research claims the number of users owning an Apple Watch has recently reached a new record, as the Apple device is now sitting on the wrists of no less than 100 million people.

“The smartwatch attach-rates for smartphones have been steadily rising. Apple’s ecosystem is seeing a greater attach rate as the brand continues to bake in attractive designs, health features and related services around it. Apple Watch’s user base crossed the 100-million mark for the first time during the quarter ended June, capturing the lion’s share of the smartwatch user base globally. The US continues to be the key Apple Watch market, contributing to more than half of its user base, with an attach rate of close to 30%,” Senior Analyst Sujeong Lim said.

News of strong Apple Watch sales come at a time when Apple is now getting ready to launch a new-generation model.

The company is projected to announce the Apple Watch Series 7 at a dedicated event in September when it would also take the wraps off the iPhone 13. Sales of the new smartwatch are expected to kick off later the same month.
