Stats show the Apple Watch keeps growing

Nearly one in two smartwatches sold in the second quarter of 2019 was an Apple Watch, according to a new set of statistics, as Apple’s device managed to increase its market share from 44 percent to 46 percent.

Sales of the Apple Watch jumped from 3.8 million in Q2 2018 to no less than 5.7 million in the corresponding quarter of this year, Strategy Analytics claims.

Samsung continues to be the runner-up, but far-far away, with 2 million sold units, while Fitbit is third with 1.2 million units.

“Apple shipped 5.7 million smartwatches worldwide in Q2 2019, rising an above-average 50 percent from 3.8 million in Q2 2018. Apple Watch remains a long way ahead of the chasing pack and its global smartwatch marketshare has grown to 46 percent this quarter, up from 44 percent a year ago. Apple Watch has fended off strong competition from hungry rivals like Fitbit. Apple remains the clear smartwatch market leader,” Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, says.

Growing smartwatch sales

The good news is that the smartwatch market as a whole increased during the quarter, and needless to say, the latest-generation Apple Watch clearly had a major contribution to this strong growth.

Strategy Analytics say smartwatch shipments jumped no less than 44 percent year-over-year, reaching 12.3 million in Q2 2019 versus 8.6 million units in Q2 2018.

Fitbit is the company that appears to be in panic mode right now, as it declined from the previous year, all while other companies are waiting to eat up its market share.

“Fitbit has struggled to compete with Apple Watch at the higher end of the smartwatch market, while its new Versa Lite model has struggled to take-off at the lower end. Fitbit will have to move fast to execute a recovery, because Samsung, Garmin, Fossil and other competitors are keen to grab a slice of its valuable health and fitness customers,” Mawston explained.

Fitbit currently accounts for just 9.8% of the smartwatch market, down from 15.2% in Q2 2018.
