New data published by Counterpoint reveals that Apple Watch continues to be the smartwatch that everybody loves these days, with Apple accounting for no less than 51.4% of the entire market.

The H1 2020 stats show that Apple has improved from 43.2% in the same period a year ago, with increasing demand for smartwatches.

“Apple continued to dominate the smartwatch market both in volume and value. Apple captured a record half of the market in terms of revenue due to strong demand for the Apple Watch S5 models. In terms of shipment volumes, Apple Watch grew 22% globally with Europe and North America being the fastest growing markets in the first half of 2020,” Counterpoint analyst Sujeong Lim said.

The best-selling smartwatch in the first half of the year was the Apple Watch Series 5, followed by the Series 3 and the Huawei Watch GT2. Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 came fourth, while the Imoo Z3 4G was fifth in the charts.

More choices in the smartwatch market

Researchers explain that while Apple continues to dominate the smartwatch market, more and more companies are investing in this area, including Fit, TicWatch, and Suntoo.

Google’s Wear OS is currently powering just 10 percent of the smartwatch market, which makes Apple’s watchOS the dominant pick right now.

“Huawei’s Lite OS and Amazfit’s Amazfit OS are growing fast. Further, the cellular-capable smartwatch is becoming more popular and accounts for more than one in four smartwatches shipped, benefitting the likes of Qualcomm. Heart rate monitoring now is featured in almost 60% of the smartwatches. Fall detection and SPO2 are the features that should see mass-adoption in future models. Square form-factor accounts for almost two-thirds of the smartwatches globally as the form factor is helping to better fit additional sensors and needed battery footprint,” Counterpoint Research Director Jeff Fieldhack said.

Apple is projected to launch a new Apple Watch in the fall, with watchOS 7 also scheduled to go live alongside iOS 14.
