Apple announced today during the WWDC 2019 live event the iOS 13 operating system for iPhone and iPod devices, a massive release that finally introduces a long-anticipated Dark Mode, as well as numerous other new features, enhancements, and updates apps.

Dark Mode, which was introduced to the Mac with last year's macOS Mojave 10.14 operating system, has finally arrived on the iPhone and iPod with iOS 13, a major release that also introduces new ways to browse the Web, enhanced photo editing and organizing features, the ability to sign in to apps and websites with your Apple ID, as well as a brand-new way to navigate the world with an all-new map.

iOS 13 promises great performance improvements for older and new devices leading to twice as fast launching of apps, up to 30 percent faster FaceID unlocks, and up to 60 percent smaller updates. It also promises to better protect your privacy with a plethora of new privacy features, totally revamps the Reminders app, brings new Siri capabilities, improves Location Services, and adds support for third-party apps to CarPlay.

"iOS 13 brings new capabilities to the apps you use every day, with rich updates to Photos and Maps, and privacy-protecting features like Sign In with Apple, all while delivering faster performance," said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. "We’re excited for customers to experience what’s coming to iPhone this fall and can’t wait for them to see how great everything looks in Dark Mode."

Supported devices and availability

In addition to the features mentioned above, iOS 13 will bring the ability to make adjustments to Portrait Lighting right in the Camera app and a new High-Key Mono effect, a powerful new experience for people with disabilities thanks the much-improved Voice Control feature, an enhanced iOS keyboard with one-hand typing and swiping support, as well as improved Health and Notes apps.

iOS 13 will be supported on iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPod touch (7th generation). The beta version is out today for early adopters, and it will be available for public testing in July. The final release of iOS 13 is expected this fall, most probably in September.
