Apple’s 2022 fall event is going to witness the debut of several essential products, including not only the iPhone 14 but also the Apple Watch Series 8.

We’ve known for a while that Apple was working on a rugged version of its smartwatch, and now it looks like this highly anticipated model is finally ready to see the daylight.

LeaksApplePro information, however, indicates that this year’s Apple Watch refresh may not be as exciting as many people out there expect it to be.

Three Apple Watch models coming

First and foremost, the good news.

Apple will launch not one, not two, but three different Apple Watch models this year. The first of them will be the “regular” Apple Watch Series 8, which will be a direct successor to the Series 7.

The second will be the more affordable Apple Watch SE, which will come in the form of an upgraded model of the existing lineup.

And the third is the one that everybody seems to be drooling after. Called Apple Watch Extreme, this new edition could be a more durable version of the smartwatch, also packing a larger battery and specifically focused on outdoor activities. The smartwatch could get upgraded specs, including a tougher body, and in some ways, it could be positioned as an alternative to Garmin’s robust smartwatches.

The bad news

Unfortunately, it looks like the Apple Watch Series 8 won’t come with any massive design upgrade.

People familiar with the matter said on several occasions that the current model (Series 7) was supposed to come with flat edges, but this change was abandoned at the very last minute due to struggles encountered by Apple’s suppliers with the new display.

The company was originally believed to be pushing back the debut of the new design to 2022, but if LeaksApplePro is right, then the curved edges will continue to be offered on the Series 8 as well. In other words, the Apple Watch Series 8 will look pretty much like the Series 7, which in turn looks very similar to the Series 6, and so on.

The upgrades will take place internally, so expect a new chip and possibly new sensors, including for measuring the body temperature.
