Apple launched the iPhone 12 with much fanfare last fall, and while the company no longer shares any data on how its devices sell these days, data from suppliers shows strong demand, at least for some specific models like the Pro and the Pro Max.

Speaking during the call with analysts after the earnings report, CEO Tim Cook revealed that iPhone 12 generated a record number of upgrades, and it’s believed the switch to 5G is what has convinced so many people to get a new iPhone.

“If you look at this past quarter, which has -- we started selling two of the iPhones 4 weeks into the quarter and the other two, seven weeks into the quarter. And so I would caution that this is in the early going. But in looking at the iPhone 12 family, we saw both switchers and upgraders increase on a year-over-year basis. And in fact, we saw the largest number of upgraders that we've ever seen in a quarter. And so, we were very thrilled about that,” Tim Cook said.

“The customer response to the new iPhone 12 models' unprecedented innovation from world-class cameras to the great and growing potential of 5G has been enthusiastic, even in light of the ongoing COVID-19 impact at retail locations,” he continued.

In other words, the addition of 5G to the iPhone lineup is what convinced those sticking with an older model to upgrade.

At this point, however, we still don’t know what iPhone models are selling better than others, but recent reports indicated the company reduced the production of the mini in order to focus more on the Pro and the Pro Max. iPhone 12 mini is the smallest and cheapest model in the entire lineup, coming with a 5.4-inch display and a $699 starting price in the United States.
