New research published by Canalys reveals that PC sales, including tablets, went down 3 percent in the first quarter of the year, dropping to 118.1 million units.

But despite the decline, Canalys emphasizes that overall shipments are still at very high levels, at least as compared to the pre-2020 market performance.

When it comes to tablets alone, Apple is by far the undisputed leader in this side of the market. The Cupertino-based tech giant sold no more, no less than 14.8 million iPads in the first quarter of 2022, therefore securing a market share of 38.6 percent.

Samsung is obviously the runner-up, but it’s very far behind rival Apple. The South Korean company sold only 7.8 million tablets during the same quarter, thus reaching a market share of 20.4 percent. Amazon is third in the charts with just 3.5 million tablets.

Huawei obviously losing ground

“Worldwide tablet shipments fell slightly, by 3%, but against what was an exceptionally strong Q1 2021. Apple, in first place, saw a 2% fall in shipments in Q1 as it shipped 14.9 million iPads worldwide. Second-placed Samsung also posted a 2% decline for a total of 7.9 million tablets shipped,” Canalys explains.

“For the first time in over a year, Amazon surpassed Lenovo to take third place with a growth of 3% on the back of heavy discounting of its Fire tablets. Lenovo endured the second biggest decline of the top five vendors, with its shipments down 20% year on year to 3 million units. Huawei rounded out the top five, with a 22% decline and 1.7 million tablets shipped globally.”

Huawei is unsurprisingly the company that recorded the biggest drop, as it declined 21.7 percent year-over-year. The company sold just 1.6 million tablets in Q1 2022, though it continues to control approximately 4.4 percent of the market.
