We’re only a few days away from the moment Apple will take the wraps off its next-generation iPhone, and despite the CIA-like secrecy that Cupertino has become famous for, we already know pretty much everything about these new devices.

While a certain amount of skepticism is required given these are unconfirmed details, most of the information that you’re going to find below comes from very reliable sources familiar with Apple’s plans.

In other words, there’s a 99 percent chance that what you read here is also accurate, and as you’ll observe, everything makes perfect sense given Apple’s new smartphone approach.

First and foremost, it’s important to know that Apple will unveil three different iPhones this year, as it follows: an iPhone X successor with a 5.8-inch display, a 6.1-inch model with LCD, and a larger configuration with a 6.5-inch OLED screen.

In this article, we’re going to discuss about the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone, but you can click the links above to read more information about the other models as well.

This will be the new iPhone XS

Technical specifications

The new 5.8-inch iPhone will be positioned as a direct successor to the iPhone X, and as a result, it could be launched as iPhone XS (pronounced iPhone 10 S).

This means that in terms of looks, the new model would be very similar with the original iPhone X, and a bunch of leaks indicate that dimensions would remain pretty much the same, namely 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm (5.65 x 2.79 x 0.30 inches).

The edge-to-edge design with a notch at the top would be retained, and the phone would still be made of glass, which in turn allows for wireless charging. Apple could also improve charging speeds, though reports in this regard are still contradictory.

Power will come from Apple’s new A12 chip paired with 4GB RAM, a notable increase from 3GB on the iPhone X. Apple rarely increases the amount of RAM on its smartphones, and the addition of new features now requires more RAM to handle more demanding processes.

The A12 chip is the first to feature a 7-nanometer design, and this should lead to increased battery life and better performance, especially when multi-tasking. Very important to note is that the device is likely to come with a battery whose capacity would be mostly the same as on the iPhone X, namely 2716 mAh, so no substantial change in this regard.

In terms of cameras, the iPhone XS will definitely come with a dual-camera configuration despite rumors of a triple-lens setup. Most likely, Apple will refine performance in low-light, as well as the software processing side of its system with notable changes powered by the arrival of iOS 12.

Price, versions, and availability

Super-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the company wants to make the base iPhone configuration more affordable this year, and there’s a chance the entry-level iPhone XS model could thus cost just $899.

At this price, expect the phone to come with just 64GB storage, though 128GB and even 512GB versions are supposed to be offered – the latter, however, may be exclusive to the larger sibling.

What’s almost certain, however, is that the iPhone XS with a 5.8-inch screen won’t cost as much as the original model last year, especially because Apple introduces a bigger version that will obviously set a new price record.

iPhone XS will be sold in the same two versions as its predecessor, namely silver and space gray, and it’s believed a more exquisite gold color is also planned. This may be available only on the top-of-the-range configurations with 512GB storage, however.

The device will be unveiled on September 12, and pre-orders are likely to begin on September 14 (the next Friday). Shipments will probably kick off later this month, possibly a week later on September 21.
