Apple was the company experiencing the biggest decline in terms of laptop sales in the third quarter of the year, according to new data shared by TrendForce.

The Cupertino-based tech giant dropped no less than 24.3 percent from the same quarter a year ago. Apple accounts for only 7.9 percent of the sales in the laptop business, according to the cited source, down from 10.4 percent in Q3 2017.

HP continues to be number one with 25.3% share, followed by Lenovo and Dell with 19.8% and 16.8%, respectively. Thanks to a slower decline, Asus managed to overtake Apple and become the fourth largest notebook brand worldwide with 8.4% share.

Apple declines despite MacBook Pro upgrade

Dell posted the strongest performance in the said quarter, up to 8% year-over-year, and figures are very likely to continue growing for the rest of the year.

“Due to rising commercial notebook sales, Dell’s shipments for the whole year are projected to increase by over 12% YoY, the highest among the top six notebook makers. The company’s annual shipments are expected to reach 28 million units,” TrendForce says.

As far as Apple is concerned, the drop was experienced despite the MacBook Pro upgrade announced in July, and TrendForce indicates that the arrival of the new MacBook Air in Q4 may have convinced a substantial number of customers to delay the purchase of a new laptop.

“Apple this year adopted a new processor in its high-end MacBook Pro with OLED Bar, but the performance improvements hardly attract more customers due to the series’ high price tags. Moreover, the launch of new MacBook Air was delayed to Q4, and Apple’ Q3 shipments turned out to fall by 24.3% YoY as the result,” it says.

Overall, sales during the quarter fell 0.02% versus Q3 2017, with 42,680 million units sold worldwide.
