Preview version expected at WWDC in June

Apple’s next version of iOS is expected to come with lots of improvements, including a highly-anticipated dark mode.

But in addition to all of these, it looks like the Cupertino-based tech giant might also be working on a different kind of update that many are going to love (but which some don’t really care about): four new Animoji.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith, who has a good track on Apple scoops, says the company is working on adding four new Animoji characters to iOS 13.

“It looks like iOS 13 might get some new Animoji: a cow, octopus, mouse, and an emoji face. That last one sounds like it has potential for shenanigans,” he posted on Twitter a few hours ago.

Specifics aren’t available right now, but some speculate that the mouse face could be a continuation of Apple’s agreement with Disney, so the character may end up being the beloved Mickey Mouse.

The dark mode

While this is something that remains to be seen, not everyone is so excited about getting new Animoji and would rather see Apple focusing on improvements in other areas.

One particular new feature that’s likely to be received well is the aforementioned dark theme, which would pretty much solve one of the biggest annoyances on the iPhone right now. Rolling out a dark theme for the iPhone makes a lot of sense right now, especially as the device has made the switch to OLED displays, and only one model uses LCD right now.

The 2019 iPhone lineup is expected to be the last one featuring an LCD, while beginning with 2020, the iPhone family of products would use OLED screens entirely.

Keep in mind that all of these are still in the rumor stage right now, but we should find out more about iOS 13 in just a couple of months at WWDC.
