Apple released today the macOS Mojave 10.14 computer operating system for supported Macs, a major release that adds a long-anticipated Dark Mode, as well as new features and improvements.

About four months in the works, macOS Mojave 10.14 is finally here and you can install it right now on your Mac computers (see supported models and update instructions below). It's a major update compared to the macOS High Sierra 10.13 series that introduces a new Dark Mode, which is available for all the default apps and numerous others you might have installed.

macOS Mojave 10.14 also introduces several new features to make your Mac computing experience better, including Desktop Stacks to help you keep your desktop cleaner, as well as a new view mode called Gallery View in Finder that makes it easy to preview images, videos, presentations, documents, as well as numerous other file types, and that also supports viewing of metadata for images and other files.

There's also Quick Actions, a new feature that lets you run custom Automator Actions or create PDF documents that can be password-protected right from Finder, as well as support for the Quick Look feature for faster, full-size previews of files. The screenshot tool has been dramatically improved in macOS Mojave 10.14 with a cool and handy user interface to help you be more productive when taking a series of screenshots.

Four new apps now installed by default in macOS Mojave 10.14 ported from iOS, namely News, Stocks, Voice Memos, and Home. Furthermore, Apple made it harder for third-parties to track your browsing activity by implementing new security features in the Safari web browser, the Mac App Store has been completely redesigned, and the Update functionaly was moved to the Preferences panel.

"macOS Mojave is a major update that introduces powerful new features for a wide range of Mac users, from consumers to pros,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. "Dark Mode brings a dramatic new look to macOS that puts your content front and center, familiar iOS apps come to the Mac for the first time and the redesigned Mac App Store makes finding new apps easier and more enjoyable than ever."

Supported Macs

Unfortunately, macOS Mojave 10.14 isn't supported on the same Mac computers that the previous series, macOS High Sierra 10.13, supported. Therefore, you can only install macOS Mojave 10.14 on MacBook Early 2015 or newer, MacBook Air Mid 2012, MacBook Pro Mid 2012 or newer, Mac mini Late 2012 or newer, iMac Late 2012 or newer, iMac Pro 2017, and Mac Pro Late 2013.

Additionally, macOS Mojave 10.14 is supported on Mac Pro Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable graphics processing units, including the Sapphire Radeon PULSE RX 580 and MSI Gaming Radeon RX 560 GPUs. Other Mac computers older than 2012 and the ones mentioned above are not supported by macOS Mojave 10.14 and will never be.

How to update you Mac to macOS Mojave 10.14

If your Mac is listed in the paragraphs above, you'll be able to update to macOS Mojave 10.14 as we speak by opening the Mac App Store application, accessing the Updates tab, and checking for updates. You should see the macOS Mojave 10.14 software update listed in the list of updates, so click on the "Update" button next to it to download and install the new operating system on your Mac computer.

Once the macOS Mojave 10.14 update has been downloaded, which could take a while depending on your Internet connection, you'll be notified to install it. The entire installation process will take about 40-50 minutes, depending on the specs of your Mac, during which the computer would be rebooted a couple of times. That's it, enjoy macOS Mojave 10.14 and its new features!
