Apple announced today that it has updated the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro line-up for the 2019-2020 back-to-school season with special discounts for students and updated components.

The MacBook Air 2019 models come with 13-inch True Tone Retina displays to offer customers a more natural viewing experience, as well as a new price tag of $1,099 USD or $999 USD for college students. On the other hand, the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro is now powered by 8th Gen Intel Quad-Core processors and features a Touch Bar with Touch ID, the Apple T2 Security Chip, and True Tone Retina display, available at $1,199 USD for college students or $1,299 USD for everyone else.

"College students love the Mac — it’s the notebook they rely on from the dorm room to the classroom, and the No. 1 choice among higher education students," said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac Product Marketing. "With a lower $999 student price for MacBook Air and the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with faster performance, Touch Bar and Touch ID at $1,199 for students, there’s never been a better time to bring a Mac to college."

Back to School promotions, 12-inch MacBook discontinued

Both the 2019 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro are now part of Apple's Back to School promotion, which means that those who buy an eligible MacBook or iMac will also get a pair of Beats Studio 3 Wireless headphones. They are available for purchase starting today through Apple's online store at apple.com, as well as via the Apple Store app and in select Apple Stores, and it's coming to Apple Authorized Resellers later this week.

With today's MacBook updates, Apple has also discontinued the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar, so you won't be able to purchase one with a physical Esc key and the multimedia buttons that were available in the 2017 and 2018 models. Also, Apple has discontinued the 12-inch MacBook, which is no longer available for sale, except maybe if you're lucky to find it in stock at your local hardware store.
