Report claims widgets are coming to the iPhone this fall

The next major iOS update due in the fall is likely to include some pretty huge changes for the iPhone, including the debut of screen widgets.

In case you believe you’ve heard of widgets somewhere else, you’re perfectly right, as the very same feature is already available on Android, so there’s a good chance Apple is about to copy the whole idea and bring it to the iPhone.

iOS 14 code discovered by 9to5mac indicates that Apple is still working on screen widgets for the iPhone, so it’s better not to hold your breath for this feature, as the company can very well kill it off completely overnight.

iOS 14 preview coming at WWDC in June

But if it doesn’t, then the widgets, which are currently being developed as part of a project referred to internally as Avocado, could debut on the iPhone in the fall of this year when the software update goes live for everyone.

By the looks of things, Apple wants users to be able to move the widgets across the screen, which would technically provide us with a new customization option which once again reminds of Android.

Of course, it remains to be seen how the whole thing is going to work, but at first glance, the iPhone home screen is about to become a lot more dynamic after the debut of iOS 14.

The new software update is likely to get its very first public demo at the WWDC in June – Apple has already canceled the physical event but moved it online, so everyone will be able to watch the announcements as part of the digital conference. A preview of iOS 14 is likely to be released as well, obviously followed by developer and public betas shortly after the WWDC.
