The new OS version is available for Series 5 and Watch SE

Apple has officially released a new watchOS update today, but this time, only a couple of devices are getting it.

More specifically, watchOS 7.3.1 is specifically aimed at the Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch SE, and Apple explains the purpose of this release is to resolve an issue hitting Power Reserve.

In other words, if you currently own an Apple Watch model other than the two mentioned above, you shouldn’t be able to see the update on your iPhone. Those with an Apple Watch Series 5 or Apple Watch SE can head over to the settings app on the Apple Watch and check for new software updates or simply launch the Apple Watch app on the iPhone to get it.

Only available for two models

According to the official changelog, today’s update corrects an issue that prevented these devices from charging, and this is most likely why the watchOS 7.3.1 lands totally out of the blue. Apple didn’t want to wait any longer given some devices would no longer be able to charge, so customers are recommended to install it as soon as possible.

“watchOS 7.3.1 addresses an issue that prevented some Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch SE devices from charging after entering Power Reserve,” Apple says.

In the meantime, everybody else is projected to get a new watchOS update later this month, as right now, this new release is still in the beta stage.

Keep in mind that no matter how tempting it’d be to install beta software on your Apple Watch, you shouldn’t do this if the device isn’t supposed to be used for testing, as preview builds come with an increased likelihood of issues and on the Apple Watch, it’s impossible to restore the device to a stable operating system without Apple’s help.
