Apple Maps overhaul envisioned in user concept

Apple Maps typically receives more or less breaking improvements with the release of new iOS releases, and as it happens every year, the next substantial update is expected during the summer at Apple’s WWDC conference.

And while we’re still some six months away from the moment a series of Apple Maps announcements would make the headlines, a concept created by designer Ayman Jaddaa envisions a truly massive overhaul for the app that includes everything from a more polished UI to new features and font refinements.

The Apple Maps case study starts with what the designer describes as a cleaner and more modern look based on additional tweaks to the home page and the introduction of three tabs at the bottom for Search, Commute and Me.

The Me tab is the home of upcoming bookings, but also of a new feature inspired from Google Maps that allows users to download offline apps to navigate around without the need for an Internet connection.

The Commute tab, on the other hand, is specifically supposed to come in handy when driving or using transit, as it provides access to favorite locations, but also traffic updates, driving conditions, and transit service information.

New features for Apple Maps

Ratings and reviews are also included in the updated Apple Maps experience, not powered by Yelp, but by Apple’s in-house system. Information for each location is displayed in an easy-to-read interface based on an approach inspired by iMessage, with users allowed to react to reviews with heart, thumbs up, or thumbs down.

The designer also envisioned other new features, including rewards for contributing to places, as well as audio controls right in Apple Maps for reduced distraction when driving.

All in all, this concept is massive, and Apple should really have a look at it, albeit as we all know, there’s little chance to see the company ever implementing the ideas suggested by the user community. You can also check the official page of the design study for additional info on each update.
