Smaller notch coming to the upcoming iPhone 13

We’ve known for a while that Apple plans to make the iPhone 13 notch smaller, and now a report today reveals one way the company plans to use for this purpose.

Digitimes reveals that Apple has reduced the dimensions of the VCSEL chip powering Face ID by as much as 50 percent, so overall, the size is nearly half as compared to the iPhone 12. This means the Face ID system overall would be smaller too, so in its turn, the notch itself is also getting a worthy improvement.

But in addition to smaller Face ID, Apple has also found another way to make the notch overall easier to live with on the upcoming iPhone 13.

The company has reportedly moved the speaker from the notch to the edge of the bezel, therefore saving some valuable space that would allow the notch overall to be smaller.

Apple will launch four different iPhone models this year, all of them upgrades to the current generation.

People familiar with the matter claimed this would be the last year for the iPhone mini, as Apple would then discontinue the 5.4-inch device and go for a 6.1-inch replacement beginning with the iPhone 14.

This is because the iPhone mini isn’t selling exactly as anticipated, with the company allegedly adjusting the production at some factories due to the lower demand. Apple has reportedly ordered fewer minis and more iPhone Pros, as the 5.4-inch form factor doesn’t seem to attract as many buyers as originally expected.

All iPhone models will launch in September, as Apple wants to avoid another delay like the one encountered in 2020, with sales to kick off by the end of the month. Trial production is likely to kick off by the end of this month.
