Apple has finally launched the highly-anticipated watchOS update that enables the ECG feature on the Apple Watch Series 4.

Available right now on devices updated to watchOS 5.1.2, the electrocardiogram functionality is limited to the United States, as Apple needs regulatory approval before rolling it in other markets.

The FDA reportedly offered the go-ahead of the ECG feature on the Apple Watch Series 4 only a few hours before the September 12 press event. Apple is now working with other relevant watchdogs in large markets to expand the feature to more countries.

The ECG can help diagnose a heart disease, but Apple says it loud and clear that it should by no means be used as a diagnostic device. Taking an electrocardiogram can instead help analyze the heart rhythm and detect possible signs of atrial fibrillation, but Apple says that you should consult a doctor for more information.

Using the ECG feature to take an electrocardiogram is quite easy. All you have to do is to launch the ECG app and then touch the Digital Crown to begin generation of an ECG waveform.

“The resulting ECG waveform, its classification, and any notes you’ve entered on related symptoms are automatically stored in the Health app on your iPhone. You can share them with your doctor and have a better-informed conversation about your health,” Apple says.

The same update to watchOS 5.1.2 includes additional Infograph complications for a series of apps on the iPhone, like Mail, Maps, Messages, and Find My Friends.

And because fitness tracking is becoming a key feature of the Apple Watch, this new OS version introduces animated celebrations when the daily maximum points are achieved for a specific Activity competition.
