iPhone XR successor to come with a larger battery

Apple isn’t necessarily a big fan of increasing the capacity of the batteries it uses on the iPhone, and the company typically tries to boost autonomy per charge using a series of software optimizations.

But larger batteries are without a doubt necessary, even on the iPhone, and Apple knows this very well.

As a result, the upcoming iPhone XR successor due in September will indeed bring an increase in battery capacity, according to a report from TheElec.

CATL, which is already a battery supplier for Apple, has recently started production of batteries for the new-generation iPhone XR, and by the looks of things, these early units come with increased capacity.

The new cells boast 3,110 mAh, which is a 6% increase over the 2,942 mAh currently on the iPhone XR, and this should provide a boost of at least a couple of hours per charge.

Single-cell battery

The iPhone XR successor will continue to use a single-cell design under the hood, whereas the other models will most likely stick with an L-shaped layout for extended capacity. At this point, the iPhone XS Max is the version boasting the biggest battery capacity at 3,171 mAh, but it also has a larger screen and, consequently, more space under the hood.

Apple will unveil the new-generation iPhone lineup in September, and this time there will be three different models going live, all of them successor to the current versions already on the market.

However, 2019 is expected to be the last year an LCD iPhone sees daylight, as Apple could make the full switch to OLED beginning with 2020.

This year, however, Apple might give up on its Lightning connector for USB Type-C, a move that’s been planned for a while and which could make recharging an iPhone a more convenient process overall.
