New design expected for 2020 iPhone, analyst says

The 2020 iPhone generation is already expected to bring some pretty big changes in terms of features, including 5G support, and now top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the Cupertino tech giant is actually working on more than that.

In a new note to clients, Kuo explains that the 2020 iPhone lineup will also include a new form factor, albeit the analyst hasn’t provided any specifics on this.

An entirely-new design for the iPhone should help propel sales to new records, and Kuo predicts that other major upgrades are planned as well, including the aforementioned 5G support but also what he describes as camera function upgrades.

With specifics missing for the time being, we’ll just have to wait and see what upgrades Kuo is actually pointing out, albeit previous forecasts did share a few more details in this regard.

5G iPhone all but confirmed

For example, it’s expected that the 2020 iPhone generation would no longer include the existing screen sizes, and instead of 5.8-inch and 6.8-inch iPhones, the lineup would feature 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch displays. The iPhone XR successor could stick with a 6.1-inch screen, but the device will be upgraded to an OLED panel, just like the rest of the lineup.

A 5G iPhone is all but confirmed at this point, especially after Apple settled its patent war with Qualcomm and the two signed a licensing deal that would have iPhones using chips developed by the San Diego-based firm.

With so many changes coming next year, the role of the 2019 iPhone generation could just be to buy more time until Apple finalizes all these upgrades. If this is true, many potential buyers might actually push back their purchases, instead preferring to save money until the substantially-overhauled iPhones get the go-ahead next year.
