Sketchy report pointing to dramatic change on new iPhones

Apple is planning several big changes on the 2019 generation of iPhones, and in addition to all models migrating from LCD to OLED (a transition that would begin this year), the company could also finally embrace USB-C.

This is what a new report from Digitimes notes, adding that both the iPhone and the iPad will support USB-C as the company is working on “redesigning chargers and related interface for the next-generation” models.

While this isn’t the first time we hear such a rumor, it’s important to note that the cited source has a mixed track on Apple scoops, so we better not take this for granted for the time being. Digitimes cites sources at analog IC vendors as the ones who disclosed the information.

Change not ready for 2018 models

Apple is believed to be planning an approach similar to the one for the MacBook. After using USB-C on its laptops, several notebook vendors have embraced this choice as well, the report notes, so by making the same change on the iPhone, more smartphones could eventually hit the market with this port.

On the other hand, the Android world has already migrated to USB-C, and companies who haven’t made this change on their devices are currently in the process of doing it. However, Apple replacing Lightning with Type-C could “accelerate other smartphone companies’ adoption of the interface in their products.”

This major change is only planned for 2019, as Apple “is still in the redesign phase,” which means that the company does not have enough time to finalize work on this project before the 2018 family of iPhones goes live in September.

It goes without saying that this plan, if it’s indeed real, could change before the 2019 generation of iPhone sees daylight in September next year, but with more and more sources pointing to Apple embracing USB-C, the company might be at least considering such an idea.
