The second-generation iPhone SE was believed to be just around the corner, but according to a new report, that might not be the case, as Apple plans to take the wraps off the device in September.

Japanese site Macotakara, who has a mixed track on Apple scoops, cites sources familiar with the matter as saying that the design of the iPhone SE 2 isn’t ready just yet, and as a result, Cupertino aims to unveil the new model alongside the 2018 iPhone lineup.

This is projected to happen in September when Apple is expected to introduce a trio of products, namely a successor the iPhone X with a 5.8-inch OLED screen, a more affordable 6.1-inch entirely-new model with LCD, and a Plus-sized iPhone X with 6.5-inch OLED panel.

Notch and Face ID, check

The cited report indicates that the iPhone SE 2 could make it to the market together with these three models, though some details appear to be sketchy, to say the least.

Macotakara says Apple has been testing two different iPhone SE 2 models, one of which had the design of the current generation. The second boasted a 6-inch display, it adds, so there’s a chance that the report actually points to the cheaper LCD iPhone coming in September rather than the second-generation SE.

Both designs, however, sported a notch, which is more or less confirmation that Apple is indeed planning to bring an edge-to-edge display to all models and give up on the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in favor of facial recognition.

Reports that surfaced earlier this year suggested that iPhone SE 2 could come with a design similar to the existing generation and a 4-inch display. A notch is very likely to make it to the device given Apple’s push for Face ID, though it’s not clear just yet whether the company is ready to make the switch from LCD to OLED on this smaller iPhone model as well.
