Company already said to be working on the new modem

We’ve known for a while that Apple has been working around the clock on reducing reliance on other companies, and now the iPhone maker is getting closer to one of its top ambitions in the long term.

A report from Digitimes reveals that Apple is working around the clock on preparing a modem for the iPhone 13, which in the long term means the company would give up on Qualcomm modems.

This wouldn’t just happen overnight though, with Apple expected to debut its very own modem in approximately two years. So as a result, the first iPhone to be powered by an in-house modem will be the 2023 generation, though the timing of the launch could obviously change overnight if something doesn’t go as planned.

Designed from scratch

Interestingly, Apple is planning to use a rather unusual approach, and instead of integrating the modem into its existing chip design, it wants the upcoming solution to be offered separately.

In other words, the chip will be designed from scratch and won’t be a part of the A series, the report adds.

Needless to say, Apple hasn’t said a single thing about this report, so take everything with a pinch of salt for now.

However, Apple is believed to be working on some pretty big changes for the iPhone in the long term, including the launch of a foldable model that could also see the daylight in 2023. Furthermore, people familiar with the matter said on several occasions the Cupertino-based firm was planning to ditch the Lightning port.

However, Apple wouldn’t go for USB-C, as everybody seems to hope, but develop a portless iPhone that would rely entirely on wireless connections for everything. Once again, the debut of this portless iPhone is expected to happen in 2023 at the earliest.
