The iPad is still selling like hotcakes, study shows

The iPad continues to be the most popular tablet on the planet, and recent data shared by research firm Canalys is the living confirmation in this regard.

Last year, the tablet market collapsed no less than 31 percent, with all companies selling a total of 12.7 million units in the last quarter of the year.

This is because the demand declined substantially, which more or less makes sense given everybody purchased new tablets in 2020 for obvious reasons.

Apple still dominating the tablet market

Apple was clearly the biggest company in the tablet market, as it managed to sell more than 19 million units in just a single year. In other words, the Cupertino-based tech giant doesn’t seem to care about the increased competition from other companies, as it still holds a hefty lead anyway.

“In tablets, Apple maintained its dominance in both Q4 and the full year, ending 2021 with 19.1 million iPads shipped, though this represented a 17% drop from 2020. Amazon and Samsung took second and third place with 10.9 million and 7.9 million units respectively as the country’s key Android vendors. Both saw relatively weak holiday season demand compared to the same period in 2020. Microsoft and Lenovo placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 2021 tablet market,” Canalys says.

Apple holding a big lead

In the United States, Apple dominated the fourth quarter of the year with a market share of 40.2 percent, followed by Amazon with 26.4 percent. Samsung is only the third in the charts with 14 percent, while Microsoft is fourth with 5.0 percent.

Microsoft itself, however, isn’t building stand-alone tablets but 2-in-1 devices that can also be used as tablets. However, Microsoft and its 11 percent growth is the living proof the company’s investments are growing and the Surface brand is getting bigger than ever.
