After announcing the new features of the iOS 12 mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, as well as watchOS 5 and tvOS 12, Apple unveiled today the macOS 10.14 operating system for Mac computers.

Dubbed "Mojave," macOS 10.14 introduces numerous new features and enhancements, among which we can mention a brand-new, system-wide dark appearance called Dark Mode, desktop stacks where you can organize your files more efficiently, and a new dynamic mode that changes the look of your desktop throughout the day.

The Finder received an all-new view mode called Gallery View that makes it easy to preview images, videos, presentations, documents, as well as numerous other file types. The Gallery View also supports viewing of metadata for images and other files. The screenshot tool was improved as well in macOS 10.14 "Mojave."

Four new apps are coming to macOS 10.14 "Mojave," namely News, Stocks, Home, and Voice Memos. Moreover, Apple is making harder for third-parties to track you by implementing new security features in Safari like simplified system information, and the Mac App Store has been completely redesigned from the ground up.

"macOS Mojave is a major update that introduces powerful new features for a wide range of Mac users, from consumers to pros,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. "Dark Mode brings a dramatic new look to macOS that puts your content front and center, familiar iOS apps come to the Mac for the first time and the redesigned Mac App Store makes finding new apps easier and more enjoyable than ever."

Quick Actions and Quick Look, iOS apps on macOS

macOS 10.14 also introduces Quick Actions to allow users to run custom Automator Actions or create PDF documents that can be password-protected right from Finder, as well as support for the Quick Look functionality to offer faster, full-size previews of files, along with the ability to crop and rotate images, trim audio and video streams, or mark up PDFs.

Other noteworthy features of macOS 10.14 "Mojave" include support for external GPUs and improvements to the Metal API, new Machine Learning capabilities with CreateML for CoreML 2 to train ML models on a Mac using Swift, group FaceTime, enhanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention in Safari, Continuity Camera feature, and integration of markup tools in Finder, Quick Look, and Screenshots.

Last but not least, Apple is offering macOS and iOS application developers a sneak peek of new developer frameworks that make it possible to bring iOS apps to macOS. The first apps to be ported from iOS to macOS are Home, News, Stocks, and Voice Memos. The new frameworks will be available starting in late 2019.
