Rest assured, this isn’t caused by a hardware defect

Not a long time ago, it was discovered that Apple’s latest and greatest iPhones are suffering from a problem that many believed was a hardware defect that would require their smartphones to be replaced completely.

Mysterious horizontal lines were showing up on the screen totally out of nowhere, most often when powering on or unlocking the iPhones.

Oddly enough, this was only happening on the Pro models in the iPhone 14 series, with the yellow horizontal lines sometimes flashing, just like in the case of a defective screen.

With some owners claiming they’ve got their iPhones replaced at the Apple Store, many were concerning that Apple would have to do a broad recall that would essentially pull all broken devices from the market.

Software update on the way

And given the company has until now remained completely tight-lipped, it’s not hard to figure out why all the unofficial information that reached the web through all kinds of channels created even more confusion in the iPhone 14 Pro owner base.

Apple, however, has internally acknowledged the bug, and in a memo seen by MacRumors, the company explains that it’s all caused by a software glitch. In other words, the screen wouldn’t have to be replaced, as all it takes to get rid of the horizontal lines is a software update.

The company says that the bug indeed occurs when the device is powered on or unlocked, and a fix is already in the works as we speak. For now, however, it’s not very clear when the new update could go live, but Apple might be waiting for iOS 16.3 to ship it to devices out there. As the aforementioned source notes, Apple could also use a 16.2.1 update to address the bug, especially as the issue seems to be impacting a significant number of devices.
