It’s not a secret that Android is the world’s most popular mobile operating system, but according to new data, its market share has declined significantly in the last 5 years.

Android went down from 77.32% back in July 2018 to no less than 69.74 percent in January this year. And in case you’re wondering who is the one to benefit from this decline, the answer is just one.

Apple’s iOS increased its market share from 19.4 percent to 25.49 percent, a report published by StockApps today reads.

“Its worldwide market share in January 2022 stood at 69.74%. In contrast, the OS commanded a market share of 77.32%, its highest ever, in July 2018. Thus it has ceded 7.58% of its holding in the last five years,” the research reveals.

iOS dominating in North America

While Android is the preferred choice in most regions, iOS is the top platform in North America, though the competition with Google’s mobile operating system is rather fierce in this market as well.

“The Asian and South American continents have Android dominating at 81 and 90 percent, respectively. iOS share here is 18% in Asia and 10% in South America. Other OS developers share less than one percent of the phone market on both continents,” the research notes.

“It’s a close-fought battle between iOS and Android in N. America and Oceania through the former edges it. IOS commands 54% of the market in both regions, while Android takes nearly 45%.  Again the other developers share the remaining one percent.”

Of course, while the numbers do reveal a significant decline for Android, Google’s mobile operating system is still running on nearly 7 out of 10 phones out there. This is impressive, to say the least, so Apple still has a long way to go before it can challenge Android’s domination worldwide.
