Data shows Android accounts for 63% of activations

It’s no longer a secret that Android is the world’s number one mobile phone platform, and new data shows that this is very unlikely to change anytime soon, as Google’s OS continues to dominate in terms of new device activations.

Figures provided by CIRP show that Android accounted for 63 percent of all activations in the June 2018 quarter in the United States, while iOS was the runner-up with 36 percent.

And while the difference between the two platforms continues to be quite huge, Apple users may want to see the glass half full and learn that Cupertino improved its share as compared to the same period the year before.

“Apple iOS improved its share of activations relative to last quarter and to one year ago,” Josh Lowitz, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP, is quoted as saying. “This reverses the trend from a year ago, when Apple’s share fell relative to the March 2017 quarter. As we’ve seen before, consumers have become increasingly loyal to an operating system.”

Apple and Samsung, the leaders

“While iOS gained share in a quiet quarter, in the past six quarters its share has ranged from 29- 39% of activations. Over time we expect Android and iOS to continue to split the market, with Android at about two-thirds of activations, and iOS at one-third.”

Apple and Samsung also dominate the mobile phone industry, each with 36 percent of all activations in the second quarter in the United States. The runner-up is LG with just 12 percent, while Motorola is far behind close to entering the “Others” category.

Apple is likely to benefit from a substantial increase in device activations later this year when it launches the new-generation iPhone lineup. Three different models will see daylight this year, including a more affordable device that’s expected to contribute to a new super-cycle helping Apple post record sales.
