If you've been waiting to install the latest Android 7 Nougat mobile operating system on your PC, we'd like to give you the good news that developer Arne Exton has just updated its AndEX project to the latest Android 7.1.1 stable release.

AndEX is a commercial fork of the well-known Android-x86 project, whose main goal is to port Google's Linux-based Android operating system to x86 platforms. AndEX is highly customized with numerous Android apps, the latest long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, and comes with GAPPS package pre-installed.

Probably the best new feature of the AndEX Build 170201 is the ability to run live from a bootable USB flash drive or DVD disc. However, the developer informs us that the new functionality only works with some computers, recommending users to install the Android-x86 operating system on their PCs or laptops.

"My compiled Android-x86_64 system (Nougat 7.1.1) can run live (from CD) on certain computers," said Arne Exton. "The system can, however, be installed on almost all newer laptops (and some Desktop computers). For example Acer (Aspire), HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Asus laptops."

Ships with Spotify, Google Earth, Firefox, and Google Chrome

AndEX Build 170201 comes pre-installed with a bunch of popular Android apps, including Google Chrome 55.0.2883.91, Mozilla Firefox 50.1.0, Google Earth 8.0.5.2351, Spotify 7.5.0.1076, SnapTube 4.3.0.8333, Clash of Clans 8.709.16, File Manager 2.0.0.355, YouTube 12.01.55, and Aptoide App Store 8.1.0.2.

The GAPPS package will also give users direct access to many of Google's apps and services, including Google Play Services, Google Play store, Gmail, and YouTube. AndEX uses a special kernel based on Linux kernel 4.4.40 LTS injected with some extra drivers to support more hardware components and computers.

To install new Android apps, you can use either Aptoide App Store or Google Play Store, which are pre-installed. It's also possible to install apps when running AndEX live directly from the bootable medium. However, please note that you need to have a modern PC to run Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Also, keep in mind that not all the Android applications available in Google Play Store are installable on AndEX. Some will work, others won't, so be careful before purchasing it and make sure to read all the information provided by the developer on the release announcement page.

AndEX Build 170201 is now available for purchase for the sum of $9 (~€8.35) from the developer's website, where you'll be able to download an ISO image that you can burn to a DVD disc or write on a USB thumb drive of 2GB or higher capacity. You'll also receive a zip archive of the OS if you want to manually install it on your PC.
